2-Week RV Budget

We took a 2-week road trip over the Winter 2018 break. In total, we drove 973 miles over the course of 14 days from Atascadero, CA down to San Diego, CA and then up to Temecula, CA, Idyllwild, CA, Joshua Tree, CA, Northridge, CA and finally back home to Atascadero, CA.

Overall, we spent $1,456 for four people. That works out to roughly $100 per day, $364 per person, or $25 per person per day. That said, we definitely could have come in lower if we would have been tighter on eating out and having a few beers. That said, we offset a lot of that by boondocking more than half of the time, otherwise we would have spent a lot more on campgrounds.

The other major factor that jacked up our budget was the diesel. That was by far, our largest expense and is because we drove so many miles. If we would have stayed closer to home, we could have cut that down a lot.

Overall, I would say that we probably could have cut this back to $850-$900 and still had a really good trip, but it would have been a lot tighter. We posted up the spreadsheet here if you want to use it as a base to start your budget process–hope it helps!

Overall, we don’t regret maybe going a little too big. Compared to a 2-week vacation in Hawaii or going to Europe or something, it’s waaay cheaper and this is still some of the best memories you’re ever going to make and who can put a price on that! And that’s #WhyWeWork!

See you guys on the next adventure!
